Let’s Go to the MoVIE!

visual analytics white paper

core concepts of visualizationWe recently published a white paper, and you can read it if you’d like to get the full scoop.  But we’d like to take a second and highlight one of the main focuses of the paper, which is a discussion about how to best create a MoVIE: a Mobile, Visual, Interactive Experience.

So why the long name?  When writing the paper, we sought to combine the best, most succinct concepts that spring to mind when designing mobile solutions for business and analytics users.  Every word in that acronym was chosen specifically because those words convey something important about the area we are trying to describe.  The last word — “Experience” — is particularly important.

Because when you are in the business of bringing visualization to a generation of BI users, you really do need to create an experience.  You need to create something that users will remember, that they will enjoy using and will instinctively want to return to, time and time again.

The other reason we use the word “experience” is because using a mobile BI program should be all about the process of data discovery.  Real data discovery should be organic, flowing from one point to the next, generating new insights as you delve deeper and deeper into your organization’s data.  It should not feel like the creation of a static report.  Now don’t get us wrong, there is nothing wrong with static reports!  But they are not the be-all, end-all of business intelligence!

Crafting a great MoVIE is no easy task and our white paper takes a stab at explaining why this is, by talking about the five key aspects of creating a great mobile experience.  A great MoVIE should be five things:

  • Tactile
  • Immediate
  • Concrete
  • Empowering
  • Lean

Want to know why these things are important?  Check out the paper.  In the meantime, always ask yourself what you could be doing to enhance your mobile offerings — whether that means increasing your visualization, tightening up the experience, or offering a revolutionary new interface option.  Because no matter how great your back-end platform looks, or how well it performs, capturing user engagement is the key to success.

What do you think are the most vital elements to a great mobile-visual experience?
